Governing AI coding agents in the enterprise. Eight controls your security team will ask for.
Coding agents now edit code, query databases and run commands on their own. Governing them means deciding what each agent may touch, enforcing it before every action, and keeping evidence of every decision.

The risk moved from the prompt to the action.
Early AI assistants suggested code; a person decided what to run. Coding agents execute. The moment an agent can run an ALTER TABLE, a git push --force or a production deploy, governing only the model call covers half the problem.
The controls below are what security teams ask for before they approve a coding agent for engineers, with how Kryex Admin and Kryex Code provide each one.
Eight controls for governing coding agents.
Least-privilege access, per person
An agent acts with whatever access it's given. Without per-person grants, every developer's agent effectively holds the team's keys.
People get READ, WRITE or ADMIN per database and per MCP tool. Default is deny, and the agent asks in the conversation when it needs more.
Authorization before execution
Reviewing logs after an agent ran DELETE on production is too late. The check has to sit in front of the action.
Kryex Server classifies each governed call and checks it against the person's live grant before it runs. Calls fail closed if the server is unreachable.
Credentials held centrally
Tokens in local config files leak, outlive the person, and can't be revoked in one place.
Credentials are encrypted on Kryex Server per organization and never returned by any API. Revoking access never means touching a laptop.
A command policy for every machine
Shell commands are the widest blast radius an agent has.
Allow, Ask or Block per command category — destructive deletes, Git history rewrites, disk and system — in every mode, Bypass included. Lockable on devices, even offline.
Approved tools only
MCP servers expose dozens of tools, and a tool's behaviour can change upstream without notice.
Discovered tools stay quarantined until an admin approves a READ, WRITE or ADMIN tier. A tool whose definition changes goes back to quarantine.
Human approval where it matters
Some actions should always have a person in the loop, without blocking the rest of the work.
Requests and held calls land in one admin inbox. Approving a held call runs exactly that call, nothing more.
Control over models and spend
Unapproved models are shadow AI, and unlimited usage is an open budget.
Admins choose which models each person can use and set per-person token limits, with usage by model over time.
Evidence for every decision
Auditors and incident responders need to know who allowed what, when.
Every governed decision goes to a hash-chained, append-only audit log, filterable and exportable to CSV.
Common questions.
What is AI coding agent governance?
AI coding agent governance is the set of controls that decide what an autonomous coding agent may access and do, enforce those decisions before actions run, and record them. It covers per-person access, credentials, command policy, tool approval, model access and audit.
Why isn't a model gateway enough to govern coding agents?
A model gateway governs the prompt going out and the completion coming back. A coding agent's risk is in what it executes — a SQL write, a shell command, a call to an MCP tool. Governing agents means authorizing those actions before they run, which is what Kryex Server does.
How do you stop an AI coding agent from deleting production data?
Give the person only READ on production and authorize every statement before it executes. In Kryex, a write by someone with read-only access is blocked before it reaches the database, and the agent can request WRITE with a reason for an admin to decide.
Can coding agents be governed without slowing developers down?
Yes, when routine work is allowed by default and only risky actions need a decision. In Kryex, READ actions and allowed commands run without prompts, while writes, admin actions and blocked command categories ask or are refused.
